2. Linguistics. a limiting adjective or modifier which always accompanies and usually precedes a noun or noun phrase. A in a hat, the in the big house, and every in every little thing are determiners. That, one, some, his, in that boy, one piece, some people, and his book are English determiners.
3. Biology. a) a secondary unit of germ plasm supposed to determine the character of a cell or group of cells in the organism. b) a hereditary factor; gene.
